The Western Region Drugs Task Force (WRDTF) is a co-ordinating body established in May 2003. The function of the taskforce is to research, develop and implement, using a partnership approach, a coordinated, regionally appropriate response to substance misuse.
The WRDTF which covers counties Galway, Mayo and Roscommon was established as one of the key recommendations of the National Drugs Strategy 2001-2008. Our overall aim is to significantly reduce the harm caused to individuals and society by the misuse of drugs through a concerted focus on supply reduction, prevention, treatment and research.
Role:
To co-ordinate the development of projects that are specifically designed to prevent or tackle drug and alcohol misuse in accordance with the guidelines of the National Drug Strategy 2001 – 2008.
Services:
- Assistance to schools and community groups to prioritise their needs and source drug programmes and services that best suit their needs.
- Co-ordinating ‘Positive Alternatives’ to drug use and provision of support to those wishing to provide such alternatives.
- Promotion of Healthy Lifestyle choices.
- Liaison with Statutory & Voluntary agencies to raise awareness of substance misuse issues and its local impact.
- Development of joint initiatives with Statutory & Voluntary agencies to tackle local drug problems
- Research into the extent of drug misuse and the development of appropriate responses.
- Co-ordinating support for those seeking substance misuse education and information on treatment programmes available.
